What to expect from your session

Before your session...

Drink plenty of water before your session for optimal body response.

Wear comfortable, thin, loose cotton clothing, socks, and a face mask.

Email your completed client forms to me or bring them with you.

Initialy, we will be seated while I go through your client forms and discuss your medical history and issues. If I notice any structural or postural issues, I may take photos for visual reference to compare each week and may assess your range of movement in your neck, shoulders and back.

I will then ask you to lay on the couch on your front and after a few moves ill ask you to turn over to continue the treatment on the other side.

Bowen Therapy moves are mostly very gentle and performed in sets of two-to-eight moves throughout the body. There is a two-to-five-minutes pause after each set, which gives the body time to process and assimilate the work.

Your body may respond immediately. You may feel your muscles readjusting and your body relaxing as tensions and pains ease away. You may also fall asleep, which allows the brain to re-adjust, realign, and re-vitalise your body.

Sometimes, where there is a deep-rooted trauma, you may experience an emotional release like a spontaneous flood of tears. This is perfectly normal. I will be there to guide you through the entire experience. Once your body releases these emotions, you will feel lighter and better again.

Depending on your age, issues and your body’s needs, the session may last between fifteen minutes (for babies), to up to sixty minutes and can only be judged as the session progresses. If at any point your body indicates that it has had enough, I will end the session to prevent overloading your nervous system.

At the end of the session, I will ask you to walk around the couch. Most people say that they feel taller, straighter, more mobile and have a sense of calm and deep relaxation.

Following on from the session, it is very important to keep your body well hydrated, take plenty of rest to prevent re-injury and listen to your body.

The body will continue to reset for several days after the treatment, and you may feel sensations throughout your body. It is common to feel sensations in parts of the body that have not previously been an issue. Often the pains we feel are referred and the root cause is elsewhere in the body.

You will receive a ‘Client After Care Sheet’ highlighting all the aftercare advice. It is all quite simle and doable, and I am always available to answer any concerns or questions.

It is hard to say beforehand exactly how many sessions anyone may need as it is entirely dependent on the individual, their needs, how long they have been suffering as well as how much their body is able to assimilate in any one session.

A minimum of three to six sessions are recommended and should be sufficient for simple musculoskeletal issues. Long standing and more chronic conditions may take considerably longer.

For those of you whose profession doesn’t allow you to rest the body, the chances of re-injury are higher. Once the initial problem has been resolved, regular monthly sessions are recommended to maintain and strengthen your body.

Response time

You may feel your body responding or feel a sense of deep relaxation during the session, which will continue to reset for up to ten days.

Falling asleep

Many people fall asleep during the session as their body naturally relaxes. It's a good thing as it helps your brain to readjust and rebalance your body.

Lower back and hip pain

“I started seeing Seema for Bowen Therapy towards the end of last year as I was experiencing persistent problems with pain in my lower back and hips. I was at the point where sitting for even a few minutes would cause me pain spasms for the rest of the day.
